The Singapore Indian Development Association (SINDA) is a Self Help Group established in 1991 to uplift the socio-economic status of the Indian community in Singapore. With its primary focus on education, SINDA aims to raise the academic performance of Indian students and youth through tutorials, enrichment and motivation. In addition, it also offers a wide range of services to support parents and help families in need.
SINDA facilitates various educational programmes within their premises such as IT, Robotics and Language and Literacy. Design Sojourn was engaged by SINDA to improve the space utilisation of their rooms used for the above programmes. The aim was to reduce the number of rooms used from 3 to 2 so that a spare room can be used to expand their offices.
Through a series of interviews and observations, our team gained an understanding of the needs of the different stakeholders, how they use the rooms and other administrative requirements. This information helped to guide our recommendations on people flow, spatial experiences (UX), and even furniture choices.
After brainstorming and bodystorming sessions with the SINDA team, we recommended the design the rooms to be modular and easily configurable to be able to accommodate many different activities. The freed up room was converted to become a new office space, thereby saving money and the need to rent space from other locations.
The new room layout went on to be prototyped and tested with the stakeholders before the final room renovation was implemented at the end of 2017.
