The Housing & Development Board (HDB) is Singapore’s public housing authority. The HDB plans and develops Singapore’s housing estates; building homes and transforming towns to create a quality living environment for all. They provide various commercial, recreational, and social amenities in Singapore towns for Singaporeans’ convenience.
The Cool Ideas competition leads HDB’s efforts in Open Innovation. Held over a period of 3 months, HDB’s Cool Ideas Open Competition 2016 is a means to solicit ideas from the public and various community groups to enhance the living experiences in HDB developed communities.
One of the key challenges in previous iterations of this competition was a lack of traction in the ideas that came out of the competition. Design Sojourn was therefore engaged to conduct a series of Design Thinking Hackathon type workshops for the participants to help participants bring their ideas into prototypes that can be tested and implemented.
Low-Resolution Prototypes were strictly required as part of the competition submission. It was the best way to represent their ideas to HDB’s panel of judges as it helps to give each idea a healthy dose of reality.
Shortlisted teams were given further coaching and mentoring on how to refine their prototypes and creating a pitch for the final judging in September 2016.
