Competitors Flummoxed!
Click for a bigger image.
This has to be my favorite moment of Steve Jobs’ recent iPad 2 keynote at Apple’s special event on the 2nd of March 2011. I love how Steve describes the reaction of the competition at the success of the original iPad, by scrunching up his face and throwing his hands in the air.
The dictionary defines the adjective “flummoxed” as:
…baffled, confused, puzzled, stumped, foxed, at sea, bewildered, at a loss, mystified, stymied, bamboozled (informal), nonplussed…
Look at what good design can do for you, other than a 90% market share, it confuses the competition!

March 26, 2011 at 2:14 amIt’s been interesting and bizarre watching everyone else flailing around trying to come up with s real, competitive product. Personally I think they’re already way too far behind to catch up within the next 2-3 years – let’s remember that the iPad design cycle didnt start 18 months before release. It actually started *before* the iPhone, then switched to iPhone where iOS was iterated and refined, then back to the tablet using everything they learned from the phones. In this case Apple isn’t just a year or two ahead, they’re at least 5 years ahead in every aspect with the iPad – including hard user interaction data. Nobody else is even close to that and they’re trying to compress a 5-6 year process into 18 months. I don’t think any of them have a corporate culture that will beceffective at that.
There’s a reason why being “visionary” is such an advantage!
